Overview
Custom GPT is an AI assistant built on OpenAI's GPT Builder to answer domain-specific questions, draft content and automate repetitive knowledge work. Custom instructions and uploaded knowledge files give it accurate, context-aware responses without any custom backend to maintain.
The challenge
Teams lose hours every week to repetitive knowledge work — answering the same domain questions, drafting similar documents and hunting through scattered reference material. Building a bespoke AI assistant to handle this traditionally means standing up a custom backend, a vector database for retrieval, an embedding pipeline and hosting to maintain — a level of engineering and ongoing cost that is hard to justify for a single-purpose internal tool.
Our approach
We built the assistant entirely on OpenAI's GPT Builder, avoiding custom infrastructure altogether. A tailored persona and response style are encoded through custom instructions, so it answers in the right tone and format for its domain. Its knowledge is grounded in uploaded reference files rather than the model's general training, which keeps answers accurate and context-aware and lets the knowledge base be updated by simply swapping a file. Where live or external data is needed, Actions call out to external APIs at request time. The result runs on GPT-4o with no server-side code, no database and no deployment pipeline to own.
